Inlays & Onlays
Inlays & Onlays in
Rochester, NY
Conservative restorations for teeth too damaged for a filling but not ready for a crown.
Restorative Dentistry
What Are
Inlays & Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are custom restorations, sometimes called “partial crowns,” designed to repair teeth with moderate damage or decay. They replace only the damaged portion of a tooth, preserving more healthy structure than a full crown would. Both are crafted from strong, tooth-colored ceramic or porcelain for a seamless look.
Inlays fit within the grooves of a tooth’s chewing surface.
Onlays cover a larger portion of the tooth, often including one or more cusps.
Resist staining and wear over time
Custom-fitted for a precise, comfortable restoration
Long-lasting with proper care

OPTIONS
Our Approach to
Inlays & Onlays
Sometimes called partial crowns, inlays and onlays sit between a filling and a crown — here is how we use them.
Inlays
Inlays fit within the cusps of a tooth, making them ideal for damage on the chewing surface. They preserve more healthy structure than a full crown while sealing the tooth against further decay.
Ceramic & Porcelain
Both inlays and onlays are crafted from strong, tooth-colored ceramic or porcelain. The material resists wear and staining and is matched to your tooth for a seamless look.
Onlays
Onlays extend over one or more cusps to cover larger areas of damage. They restore the biting surface and strength of a tooth when a filling will not hold but a crown would remove too much.
Replacing Failed Fillings
When an old filling breaks down or a tooth develops moderate cracks and wear, an inlay or onlay rebuilds it with far more strength than another filling. It is part of a conservative plan to save as much natural tooth as possible.
HOW IT WORKS
The
Inlay & Onlay Process
A conservative repair that takes two visits and removes as little tooth structure as possible.
Evaluation & Preparation
We assess the tooth and prepare it for restoration.
Impressions
A custom mold is taken to create your inlay or onlay.
Temporary Protection
A temporary filling may be placed while your restoration is crafted.
Final Placement
The inlay or onlay is bonded to your tooth for a precise, lasting fit.

How long do dental implants last?
With proper care and maintenance, dental implants can last a lifetime. The crown on top may need replacement after 10–15 years.
Is a crown or a filling better for my tooth?
It depends on the extent of damage. Small areas of decay are best treated with fillings, while larger areas or weakened teeth benefit from the full coverage of a crown.
What is full mouth reconstruction?
Full mouth reconstruction combines multiple restorative procedures to rebuild all or most of your teeth, restoring function, aesthetics, and oral health.
Do you offer same-day crowns?
We use advanced digital impression technology for precise crown fabrication. Depending on the case, some restorations can be completed in fewer visits.
